Essentially the gallbladder is not required to live. It is responsible for digesting fats in food. Many people when eating an unusually high fat meal will have pain in their upper abdomen called a gallbladder spasm.

People who have had there gallbladder removed will often have issues eating high fat meals because it is not as digested and causes very fast gastrointestinal distress(diarrhea). The gall bladder stores the bile produced by the liver. You can still live if your gallbladder is removed.

Bile, a yellow-green bitter fluid that is produced by liver cells, is continuously produced and then stored in the gallbladder until needed. It is a digestive liquid which emulsifies fats and neutralizes acids in partly digested food to aid in digestion. When the stomach senses the presence of fat it secretes a hormone called cholecystokinin which signals the gall bladder to contract and release the bile into the first part of the small intestine where it mixes with the food as it leaves the stomach.

The gallbladder (or cholecyst, sometimes gall bladder) is a small non-vital organ which aids in the digestive process and concentrates bile produced in the liver. The gallbladder stores and releases bile which is made by the liver. The gallbladder releases bile when food containing fat enters the digestive tract. The bile emulsifies fat in food that has been partially digested.

Releases bile which aids in the digestion of dietary fat (lipids). The bile is produced by the liver and the gallbladder just stores it until needed. The stored gallbladder is actually more potent than bile coming straight from the liver. Bile also neutralizes the partially digested substance coming from the stomach.

The gallbladder is the storage site for bile. Bile is made in the liver and stored in the gallbladder, just to clarify. Bile is very important for the digestive system; it emulsifies fats and neutralizes the HCl in the duodenum (part of the small intestine).

The liver continuously secretes bile. This bile goes to the gall bladder. Most of the water is absorbed and you get the bile concentrated in the gall bladder. The gall bladder stores the bile. The same bile is pushed to the digestive tract, whenever needed by the digestive system.

Your gall bladder stores the secretions from the liver. It concentrates the secretions almost thirty times. It sends the secretions to second part of duodenum, as and when required.
