The independent variable is the thing in the expeirment that you purposly change.

If I took different sizes of paper airplanes and counducted an expieremnt to see which one went the farthest, the size of the airplanes would be the INDEPENDENT VARIABLE while the distance of flight would be the RESPNDING VARIABLE

P.S- there can only be one independent variable in a controlled expierement.

In a scientific research or experiment, independent variable is the one whose value you change in order to see the output as a result of such change. If the quantity you measure in the experiment depends on the preset independent variable, than this quantity is a dependent variable. For example, we can set up an experiment in which we measure time needed for an apple to fall from different heights. First we go to the first floor, release the apple and measure the falling time. Then we go one floor up, repeat the measurement, and so on. In this experiment, the height from which we were releasing the apple, we can consider as independent variable, and the falling time as dependent variable, because the time depends on our freely selected heights.

It is the variables you will not change to keep the experiment a fair test, they should be kept constant to show how your independent variable affects your dependant variable.

What are the variables used in an science fair project?

A well designed science fair project should have one independent variable, one dependent variable, and lots of factors that are held constant as you repeat the experiment several times to verify your results.

What is definition and examples of dependent variable and independent variable?

I'm doing a science project on if fingerprint patterns are inherited? what is the control, independent variable and dependent variable? An ''independent variable is a ''variable which is presumed to affect or determine a dependent ''variable. independent variable is typically the variable being manipulated or changed and the dependent variable is the observed result of the independent variable being manipulated.'''''' Example; In price and sales relationship one can manipulate price to check its effect on sales, so sale is dependent and price is independent variable.
