The "moment" magnitude of an earthquake is a measure of how much energy is released when an earthquake occurs. It is derived from the stiffness or rigidity of the rock mass around the fault rupture zone, the length of the fault that moved and the cross sectional area of the fault zone. Seismologists can also estimate its value based on the amplitude of seismic waves recorded on a seismometer.

The Richter scale (currently used to measure small and medium strength earthquakes with magnitudes below 7.0 - larger earthquakes magnitudes are measured using the moment magnitude scale as described above) is also a measure of the amount of energy released by an earthquake and is derived based on the maximum amplitude of the seismic waves as recorded on seismometers.
