The five or Pentagram has always had mystical meaning. It has been found scratched in stone age caves as old as man himself. It has always been with us. It has been closely associated with astronomical and religious meaning and at certain points in history with sinister doings. Babylonian,Sumatran and Hebrew writings and drawings were often embellished with the pentagram.

According to the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, five was the number of Mankind.

The five being elements of fire, water, air, earth and the spirit.

The pentagram was a preferred emblem to adorn the jewelry and amulets of early Christians. They wore the pentagram as representing the five wounds of Christ on the cross while at the same time it symbolized doctrines of Magic, Alchemy and Kabbalah to non-Christian groups.

In the time of the Greeks the pentagram was used to create closeness to the gods through ritual symbolism.

In these modern times, the pentagram has been most associated with NeoPagans and Wiccans. In most Wiccan and Pagan rituals, its symbolic meaning is derived from Ceremonial Magic and protection. The five are the four elements ruled by the spirit. In many of these rituals the pentagram also symbolizes unity of the circle with the realm of the spirit and the elements.

Many of the Founding Fathers of the United States were Freemasons, to whom the Pentagram is an important symbol. The five pointed star appears in much of the countries early iconography. The US flag, the Great Seal, and on its currency. It is even to be found in the Capitol, where the White House sits at the apex of a giant pentagram.

A pentagram without the circle around is known for the 5 elements (years ago ice was considered an element) and a pentagram with a circle around means protection or if upside down the god of pleasure. The pentagram is often rolated to the devil because when upside down it looks like the god of pleasure, which had horns, pointy ears and a goatee. Christians disapproved of the god of pleasure due to the fact that they tried so hard to avoid certain pleasures because they believe once they've sinned their domed forever but Catholics had a different approach which was if they sinned they could ask for, forgiveness, receive it then be okay, so the Christians started saying the god of pleasure as the devil so that Christians would hopefully fear the idea of catholics or would not be tempted to join a new religion.

A Pentacle is a pentagram with a circle around it, it has multiple meanings.

1) The 5 elements: Fire, water, earth, air, and spirit.

2) Inverted is the sign of the unelightened spirit being at the bottom rather than the top.

3) Depending on how its drawn it can be for invoking (Magick rights) or for banishing (or protection) i believe drawing it widdershins (starting with the horizontal line) is for invoking and drawing it deosil (starting with the more vertical left line) is for banishing.

4) An inverted pentacle is commonly used by satanists but originated with wiccans as a sign for the high priest or priestess.

The significance of the pentagram - 5-pointed star - depends on the context. By far the most common meaning is American patriotism. There are no less than 50 five-pointed stars on the American flag, and the star is displayed on countless government and military insignias.

In Christianity, the Star of Bethlehem is often depicted as a pentagram with the downward point directing the viewer toward the Infant Christ.

In Wicca and other Neo-Pagan contexts, the pentagram or pentangle represents the 5 Sacred Things: Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit.

There is no specific "Masonic Pentagram", or a pentagram unique to Freemasonry. The pentagram, or 5-pointed star, is used to represent several ideas within Freemasonry. These ideas are as mundane as representing a star in the night sky, as enlightening as representing the 5 physical senses, or as profound as representing a certain part of the Temple of Solomon.

Whats the meaning of the tattoo of a heart and a triangle in the middle?

As far as I'm aware, the "heartagram" as it's known, doesn't hold any symbolic meaning within tattoo history. However it is the recognized symbol of a finnish band known as HIM, and the band have been noted to have said, that the heartagram "stands for the band as a whole, in it's entirity". It is in design, meant to be somewhere between a heart, and a pentagram, and the bands frontman Ville Valo has been quoted as saying that the heartagram is "a modern day Ying Yang" the heart being the Ying, and the pentagram being the Yang.
