"Technology" is so broad, but I will break it down as best I can.
For software programs, we primarily use:
Illustrator- For free-hand computer sketching usually with the use of a wacom pad.
Photoshop- For presentations, importing textile work, changing colors, etc.
For "tech packs"- which is how we communicate every aspect of the design- fabrics, trim, measurements, etc, we use Microsoft Excel, which honestly is murder, but is our only option unless we are at a huge, well-funded company that can afford the implementation of a PLM (Product Life Management) system such as WFX.
We use trend forecasting sites such as Style Sight to help us identify trends in color, silhouettes, etc
We use sites like Ali Baba for sourcing global manufacturers. We use sites like District 2 for finding vendors, suppliers and talent. We use Google images for presentations and creative direction boards.
Also, all companies have a general shared server so we can easily store & share documents.
These are the major technologies we use.
An important part of production within a fashion company are spec or tech packs. These packets contain detailed information taken from the sketch of the designer, translated into measurements in order to ensure desired fit and placement of placquets, length of zippers, width of stripes etc. The job of a technical designer is to attend the fittings of the designed garments, take measurements and compile these packets of measurements to hand off to production, which will then proceed to correct the changes or go into production. They can almost be considered the architects of garment construction.
