It comes from Middle English dingel - a deep dell or hollow, often wooded. Also a small valley or dale.

"The Dingle" in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, is a very well-known and popular public garden which is built in a natural hollow, hence the name - I have very fond memories of visits there as a child.
