It is an ancient symbol for God, the eye on the top meaning "God is watching over". The words above the pyramid are "Annuit Coeptis", Latin for "He has favored our undertaking", and the words on the banner underneath are "Novus Ordo Seclorum", Latin for "A new way of doing things for ever more". The Roman numerals on the pyramid base are "1776".
