Each person has his own thoughts / feelings / opinions and so on

The significance of the expression goes a little further - it means that other people's beliefs, opinions and actions within the law are none of my concern and that my beliefs, opinions and legitimate actions are no concern of others. It expresses the signal philosophy for living in a free, secular society of mutual regard and respect.
