In the USA excess usually means that the benefits are over and above any other insurance that you might have. In practice it means that you first must submit your claim to your primary insurance company and than after they have adjusted it than you submit the unpaid balances to the travel insurance company.

Excess means deductibles.

It is the portion of any claim that is not covered by the insurance provider. It is normally quoted as a fixed/variable amount and is a part of most policies covering losses to the policy holder.

If a policy has a Sum Insured of Rs.10000/- and deductible of Rs500/-,
It means that in any claim, the Insured has to bear the first Rs500/- .
