Metaphorical representation of the innocents in the novel - e.g. Tom, Boo, Dill etc - as in, don't harm them as they are innocent and have done nothing to deserve being hurt - in the same way that mockingbirds just sing and do not destroy crops or bother people etc.

Atticus says killing a mockingbird is a disgrace. This is because all mockingbirds do is sing.

The title "To Kill a Mockingbird" symbolizes the theme of innocence and injustice in the novel. Mockingbirds are seen as innocent creatures that bring joy through their singing, and killing one is considered a sin. This title reflects the idea of destroying something pure and good, much like the innocent characters in the story who face prejudice and discrimination.

Many elements of the novel are very metaphorical.

In the book, a mockingbird is seen as a gentle, nice, creature that does nothing bad and isn't harmful at all. Tom Robinson, the man that Atticus Finch defends from the crime, is a mockingbird in that sense. He's innocent. He's done nothing wrong. So it demonstrates how wrong it would be to kill a mockingbird, to kill an innocent being.
The mockingbird is a symblo of innocence, so to kill one is a sin. The title refers to how Tom Robinson, who was innocent, was convicted by the racist jury.

It is appropriately titled "To Kill a Mockingbird" because a mockingbird in the novel symbolized innocence, how mockingbirds don't cause any trouble but only sing their hearts out. Tom Robinson would be considered as a mockingbird because he was completely innocent when it was really Bob Ewell who abused his daughter Mayella, not Robinson. Unfortunately, Robinson was killed when he tried to escape from the guards.

Mockingbirds are considered innocent song birds, and to kill one just isn't right. So when Tom Robinson is accused with rape, he is automatically convicted mostly because of his race. He is completely innocent, but is eventually shot down. Does that seem right to you?

To Kill a Mockingbird is such a significant contribution to literature that most public schools require every student to read it. The novel is so influential because it candidly tackles the difficult-to-discuss topic of racism and the ingnorance that breeds racism. To Kill a Mockingbird accurately depicts the mentality of southern whites in the 1930's and very boldly employs the use of the "n-word," reminding us why we are so uncomfortable with the word, of the blatantly unequal treatment of African Americans, and of our country's dark history and how we must never allow such prejudice again.

In the book Ms. Maudie explains to Scout that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because they don't harm anybody, but sing their little hearts out. This is a reference to Tom Robinson and discrimination in general. Tom Robinson didn't harm anybody but they killed him anyway. It was a sinful thing.
