The volunteer hours have given Benjamin and Fiona insight into the true nature of release in "The Giver." They discover that it involves euthanizing people who are deemed as not contributing to the community. This realization eventually leads to their questioning of the community's practices.

Fiona does not have a little brother in "The Giver". It is Jonas who is the main character and he has a sister named Lily.
Near the beginning of Chapter 20, the Giver refers to Fiona as Jonas's "red-haired friend".
