Tone colour is music terminology used to describe what you hear (the sound is rich, eerie, piercing etc), to identify the performing media (instruments used in the piece of music being played) and to describe how the sounds are being produced (e.g. strumming a guitar, plucking the strings of a violin, scraping a cymbal on a drumkit etc).

the "colours" are based david lucus burge's perfect pitch ear training, they aren't much, they help to "visualise" the sound, compare them to colours. An G note is mellow sounding so see it in your head as a mellow colour and the opposite for an aggressive sounding note *the G might not be mellow
