What is the effect when people become idle and cannot find a job?

Unemployment can have a very serious effect upon the confidence of the individual which only gets worse the longer the unemployment lasts. Loss of a sense of identity which comes from having a place in the workforce, loss of contact with former workmates and colleagues, loss of social contact as it becomes more difficult to be able to afford to actually get out there and enjoy yourself and eventually the loss of drive to even get up in the morning. If you are in a relationship, these effects can be made even worse as your partner tries, perfectly reasonably, to be supportive but you can come to resent this if you try but fail to find a way back in to work quickly. The longer a person is unemployed, the greater the chances of rejection as potential employers have this idea, sometimes with justification, that you may have lost the work ethic. That's the negative side out of the way, now here's the positive approach!

The first thing to keep in mind, particularly if you have gone through a redundancy situation is this......The job was made redundant, not you! You now have the opportunity to rethink your choices in working life which may not have crossed your mind whilst you were tied to a job. What would you really like to spend a third of your life doing? What skills or experience could you bring to a job like that? Could you study to gain more qualifications for the role you would ideally like to be taking on? Could you just do it anyway and learn on the job? Who knows what you might achieve without the shackles of a secure income and all the dependence that brings with it so could you go it alone in your own business? Succeed or fail, its all down to you but you won't be making yourself redundant will you?

The important thing is to take a deep breath, a few sheets of blank paper and a pen then start making your action plan and do it on the day you become unemployed. Don't wait for procrastination to set in, get active, keep motivated and when you go for interviews, the guy or lady the other side of the interview table will see that what we have here is someone with drive, ambition and ability and if we don't take them on, our competitors probably will, so lets give it a go.

I'd like to take the perspective of the individual who might be unemployed. Consequences include loss of income, family stress and, often, psychological questioning about one's worth and value in the world.

It is important for someone who is unemployed to keep pushing forward. What are your skills? How can you communicate your value? How can you upgrade or change your skills if needed? How can you sell your skills to new markets?

In my own case, unemployment was an incredible opportunity. I chose to reinvent myself as an author and consultant and never need a job again. I learned about online marketing, information publishing, speaking, and coaching. Everybody can translate their knowledge into self-employment, if they think creatively enough and don't mind persisting in the face of uncertainty.

For the person who is employed, it is crucial to prepare now, while times are good for you, in case your job is eliminated. Store up at least a year or two of cash reserves. Keep building your network. Keep your skills up to date. Consider starting some part-time ventures on the side. In other words, be prepared so that no one and nothing can ambush you.
