Years ago there was a song by Tony Orlando & Dawn asking someone to "tie a yellow ribbon 'round the old oak tree" if she still had feelings for the man who had been away for an extended time.

The practice became associated with men away at war. The yellow ribbon became a symbol of support for the troops.
