[Edit] |
Answer
Yo is a greeting (and not just for pirates and sailors). First usage goes back to 1859.
Also famous from Robert Lewis Stevenson poem of 1881 ((when poetry was like poetic)
Fifteen men on a dead man's chest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Drink and the devil be done for the rest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
The mate was fixed by the bos'n's pike
The bos'n' brained with a marlin spike and
Cookey's throat was marked belike
It Had been gripped by fingers ten and
There they lay all good dead men
like Break o' day in a boozing ken__
Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of rum
An aside: Any relation between YO and Oui (French for Yes)??
Answer
Yo is a greeting between friends who are familiar or can be used as an interjection. It's a modern slang word used by lots including me but dates back to be CENTURIES old.
