Anyone thinking of ovning these breeds (or a mix breed dog, that includes one or more of them) should take notice that they are not the easyest of breeds. They need tons of exercise (like a couple of hours a day), they do not respond well to a classic type of dog schooling, positive reinforcement proved to be most effective, but they need a firm and experienced owner. Even though they are really beautifull and can be very gentle and loving, they are special and can prove to be quite a neusance if not taken care of correctly. Prepare for chewed shooes and furniture if bored, some can even climb fences in search of something to do or a better master, who could keep them happy and satisfied (and not bored). They are working dogs, very active and need to be occupied phisically and mentally to be happy.
Always choose a dog responsibly and take in consideration all of it's needs and all of yours.

∙ 12y agoIf you mean the rough and smooth collie, they are descended from Scottish and Welsh herding dogs that were interbred with English sheepdogs. These dogs were later bred (historians think) with the Borzoi (aka Russian Wolfhound) to get the distinctive head that these collies possess.
Border collies can trace their origin back to what are called landrace collies (collies born and bred based on the needs of the people breeding them) in the British Isles.
Bearded collies came from the breeding of polish sheepdogs with Old English Sheepdogs and the Komondor.
The above are the Dog Breeds that include the name 'collie'. Many other breeds such as the Australian Cattle Dog, the Australian Sheperd, the Shetland Sheepdog, etc. are in the collie family or possess collie characteristics or heritage.
