I had 2 Rottweilers who took predisone, I would say a 105 lb dog could take up to 40mgs of predisone if need be. Even slightly higher if it is used to correct the immune system. Otherwise as a anti-inflamatory drug a lower dose would be needed.

Prednisone is a corticosteroid that is dosed depending upon the condition being treated, the size of the dog, the overall health status of the dog and the residual effects of any previous corticosteroid administration. Your veterinarian will need to examine your dog then prescribe the appropriate amount of prednisone for your dog.

You need to read the prescription from your veterinarian to determine this. Prednisone is a hormone analog for cortisol and has serious side effects even when given at appropriate doses, which will vary depending upon the dog and the condition being treated.

This will vary depending upon the dog's weight. A veterinarian will typically prescribe based upon a certain number of milligrams per kilogram of body weight.

However, prednisone is a powerful drug and it can have multiple severe side effects, particularly for dogs. If you believe your dog needs treatment with prednisone, you should take him to your veterinarian for an examination. NEVER give Prednisone to an animal without it being recommended by a vet!

Unless you've been trained in pharmacology, don't do it ever without at least a phone call to your Vet so you can be advised as to what to look for in side effects, etc.

How long should my dog be kept on Prednisone?

This will depend greatly on why your dog was started on prednisone. If the prednisone was for a temporary condition, like getting an itchy skin under control, your dog should be weaned off the prednisone within a couple months at most. However, prednisone is also prescribed to treat Cushings disease, which is a permanent condition that requires medication for the rest of the dog's life.
