What education and training is required to become a fashion designer?

A Bachelors of Fine Arts and/or Associate Degree programs in fashion design are offered at many colleges, universities, and private art and design schools.

Besides the innate creativity and fashion sense that you must in some sense be born with, those degrees are of great help.

You need to take courses in:

Art(of course)

Business- to know how too keep up and predict how the market flows

Sewing and Knitting

Math- you have to know how to get the measurements right

Basic Anatomy- to get a better idea of how the body is portioned

Foreing Language- particularly French, German, or Italian

Basic Psychology- to know what where and when people are most likely to buy something or switch to a new fashion trend.

Try starting out as an intern for a fashion magazine or a minor modeling job just to get your name out there. The market is FIERCE so don't expect to become famous overnight, but don't give up hope! You MUST know how to blend, mix, and match colors, fabrics, and patterns as well as fabrics. Your drawing skills should be sharp so that you can sketch your designs down
