Is the battle of cold harbor a major or minor battle?

It was a major battle, and was part of the six week long "Overland Campaign" which included several other major battles, including The Wilderness and Spottsylvania. This was the first campaign Grant directed after he was brought to the east and placed in overall command. During these six weeks Grant lost more men than Lee had in his army, but at the end of those six weeks Grant had Lee forced back into the trenches around Richmond and Petersburg. Lee himself had said some time before that if ever he was forced back into these defenses, which would mean he was robbed of his freedom of movement, then "it would just be a matter of time". At Cold Harboe there were more than 12,000 Union casualties, and more than 7,000 Confederate. Cold Harbor and a battle in 1862, Malvern Hill, are often pointed out as the only time Grant and Lee, respectively, tried an unimaginative frontal assault on an entrenched enemy position. In other words, each learned his lesson after only one such disaster. This was frequently mentioned in commection with the performance of generals during the First World War fifty years later, who never thought of anything else to do.
