Many people, including those who are not Buddhists, acknowledge that the teachings of Buddhism encourage respect for all life (both human and animal), and promote a belief in non-violence. Further, Buddhism teaches through meditation that it is possible to become more peaceful and maintain calmness even in the face of crisis. Also, because of their belief in Ahimsa (non-injury), many Buddhists have been actively involved in peace movements in a number of countries.

Buddhism had a positive effect in a number of Asian countries, where it provided an opportunity to live a spiritual and ethical life whether a person had been born into wealth or into poverty. Around the time that Buddhism was created, Hinduism was the dominant faith in India and neighboring countries, and its belief in a Caste System meant that certain groups from the upper class (Brahmins) were favored, while lower caste groups (Shudras, untouchables) were seen as not sufficiently pious and in need of further rebirths to work their way up the caste system. Buddhism rejected the concept of caste and gave all believers an equal chance to reach Nirvana, by following the practices the Buddha had recommended. Buddhism also did not have a system of gods and goddesses (although later, Buddha would come to be worshiped by many believers), so elaborate and expensive rituals were not necessary. Buddhism thus appealed to a wider range of people.

Simply, The Buddha is the reason that Buddhism exists. He was the first documented person to reach enlightenment and to then teach others what he discovered. Without the Buddha there would be no Buddhism.

This is quite a difficult question to answer as Buddhist are generally a lot better at meditating that recording their impact on cultures.

It might be reasonable to say that Buddhism has made a demonstrable and profound impact across Asia.

It can be argued that Buddhist thinking was travelling across Asia into Europe along the spice road long before the journeys of Alexander the great. Much of the Greek thinking that underpins Western society dates after the birth of the Buddha but this is a connection that can be suggested rather than proven as far as I know.
