Harmful Influnces For Your Unborn Baby HYG-5535-93 Alma M. Saddam Will I have a normal and healthy baby? Will the baby be born with some kind of physical or mental problem? Will it be a difficult birth? These are a few questions you may have during your pregnancy. Certain factors related to your health could classify you as high risk. Some risk factors are Alcoholism, drug addiction, excessive smoking, and poor dietary habits. Alcohol Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant that affects many organs in your body. Many of us do not even think of alcohol as a drug. When alcohol is used excessively during pregnancy, it can affect the delicate body of your unborn baby. Research studies have shown that alcohol passes through the placenta to the baby so that when you have a drink the baby has one equal in strength. Because of the size and developing system of the fetus, this can be harder on the baby than on you. Researchers have reported that babies born to mothers who drink excessively develop irreversible brain damage and mental retardation. Babies with "fetal alcohol syndrome" are smaller and lighter in weight than normal babies. They also have severe facial malformations, heart defects, and are poorly coordinated. At present, no one knows just how much alcohol is too much. According to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, there is a definite risk to birth defects when a pregnant woman drinks 3 ounces or more of alcohol a day. Based on these research findings and until all facts are known, exercise caution in using alcohol during pregnancy. ===ANOTHER ANSWER=== Years ago doctors felt that a glass of wine or a cocktail was OK during pregnancy. Now we know that is not the case. ANY use of alchol can make the baby be born with FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome) or FAE (fetal alcohol effect). The thought now is NO alcohol during pregnancy. France and Soviet Union are tops, followed by USA. IF YOU ARE PREG OR THINK YOU MIGHT

  • Limited movement of joints
  • Extremely small penis (boys)
  • Small head
  • Facial abnormalities
  • Small eye openings
  • Skin webbing between eyes and base of nose
  • Drooping eyelids
  • Nearsightedness
  • Failure of eyes to move in same direction
  • Short upturned nose
  • Sunken nasal bridge
  • Flat or absent groove between nose and upper lip
  • Thin upper lip
  • Opening in roof of mouth
  • Small jaw
  • Low-set or poorly formed ears
  • more likely to be sex addicted

Heavy consumption of alcohol during pregnancy increases the risk that the baby could have fetal alcohol syndrome which is where the baby's growth and development are stunted, causing physical and learning and developmental disabilities. This is why it is not recommended for women to drink alcohol during pregnancy

No amount of alcohol is considered "safe" in pregnancy, and if you are trying to get pregnant it's best to avoid from the beginning. However, during the two weeks between an egg being fertilized and Mom's missed period, a baby is mostly undifferentiated stem cells, not specilized organ cells or organs forming. This seems to offer some protection from chemicals which would harm the embryo even a little later, so if you drank once or twice before you could have known you were pregnant, (or the night you made baby), it's unlikely the child will be disabled. You don't need to consider termitating the child or feel guilt that you have hurt the baby, because fortunately, the organ systems haven't begun to form until the 5th week after your LAST period. (Or one week Late.) Doctors and psychologists characterize the disorders caused by alcohol as Fetal Alcohol Specrum Disorders which include Fetal Alcohol Effects (F.A.E.) and Fetal Alcohol Symdrom (F.A.S.). F.A.S. is considered the most severe of these disorders. The effects of alcohol on a developing baby can be so profound that some doctors may recommend an abortion ('termination) to a woman who is a chronic heavy drinker, particularly if she has difficulty quitting and cannot cope with a child likely to have special needs. The effects of alcohol is pregnancy include birth defects and malformations of the head, facial features, limbs and organs. They may be minor and hardly noticable, or severe disfigurements, chronic illness, or organ failure. The organ most affected is the BRAIN. Mental and intellectual difficulties are usual for such children, and range from major learning difficulties, to low normal IQ's, to profound mental retardation. Many of these children require huge amounts of help with schooling, including educators and practices designed for disabled children. This is especially true because children suffering from prenatal alcohol exposure are often unable to understand consequences eg: the need to learn something even when it's hard. The most profound and difficult effects for many of these people are those related to behaviour and character. These problems are the result of brain damage and improper formation of brain structures. Children with F.A.E. or F.A.S often have poor impulse controll, behviour or conduct disorders, trouble understanding the consequences of actions - especially social consequences. In the worst cases these people may not even be able to appreciate the immediate consequences of actions - eg: they may commit a crime in front of the police. Some of these people have difficulty understanding or forming emotional attachments to others, or experiencing sympathy and empathy. In some cases this creates tragic consequences, such as youths severly beating a sibling for taking something without asking, stabbing a parent for imposing a restriction on them, or raping a friend because the person with F.A.S. finds them desirable and can't appreciate the negative feelings of another or the consequence of jail. An enormous number of these people end up spending time in jail. Frequently they have a hard time achieving even modest success in life, requiring supervision even as adults, and seldom are able to work unless in a program for disabled people. There is NO CURE and noTREATMENT for Fetal Alcohol Effects or Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Sufferers can be assited to be more functional through intensive therapies and training by specialists, and devoted family and educators, including finding ways to circumvent the deficits eg: electronic diaries to remind them of obligations, careful training with immediate rewards and punishments for behaviour, etc. Alcohol is the most damaging recreational drug for a developing baby, more than cocaine or heroin.
