Fire fighters use a number of different types of equipment for a number of different emergencies. Most recognizable is the hose reel and jets for spraying water onto fires. Then there are cutters and spreaders to release people trapped in their cars as a result of an accident. They also carry first aid kits and other life saving items. ∙ 10y agoA fire engine must have a pump -- the origin of the term "fire engine". Everything else is "extra", although there are standards for different kinds of engines, according to the type of services it will be used for.
The pump is generally mounted to a truck of some kind, and fitted with additional supplies and equipment, not to mention space for carrying firefighters.
Many types of engines also have hose - either pressure or suction, or both - sometimes in various sizes. There may also be fire extinguishers of different types (CO2, dry chemical foam, water, etc). An engine may have its own internal water supply, from 250 gallons up to thousands of gallons.
Engines often have additional fittings, adapters and tools for connecting hoses and valves.
Many different types of hand tools and power tools can be found on a well-equipped engine, including:
axes, hammers, haligan bars, chainsaws, jaws of life, ladders, fans, air packs, K-tool, elevator keys, pike poles, cones, cribbing, electric generator, portable lighting, CO and other gas detectors, portable GPS, forestry (wildfire) tools, first aid kits, tarpaulins, ropes, HAZMAT cleanup suits and materials, chimney-cleaning tools, portable radios, etc.
These are just a few things an engine can carry. Some departments have more some have less. Some engines are paired with another vehicle (a second engine or a "support vehicle" or a ladder truck) that carries everything but the pump.
