That's my last name! Anyways the origin is from Old French leial meaning Loyal.

This is also the modern Spanish and Portuguese word for "loyal." Our family origins are from Mexico, but we know many people from the Portuguese Azores that have this same last name. A genealogist couldn't determine its origin, so it's probably a name some rich guy gave to a devoted servant; "Juan el leal" became "Juan Leal."
