Most desert plants in the Sonoran Desert, around southern Arizona, thrive on less than 12 inches of rain a year. The soil is often rocky and hard, so that rain water does not usually soak in. So the plants adapt to flowering when there is rain (ocotillo) or adjust the size of their blooms to the amount of water available during the growing season--poppies are an example. Others (resurrection moss?) die down and then become green and productive when water is available. Many wildflower seeds remain dormant for several years until enough rain has fallen at the right times to grow the plant. Most trees (paloverde, mesquite, desert willow) do not have broad leaves, so the loss of moisture is not so high as it would be on broad leaved trees. Aside from water, many plants and cacti have vicious thorns that prevent local animals from eating their new growth. The special features of a desert plant are :
1.Roots grow deep to get water from the ground.
2.Leaves reduced into spines so they don't lose water.
3.Stems are thick, spongy and green to store water and prepare food.

The most important features for a desert plant would be the ability to collect and store water and the ability to reduce water loss .
some desert plants are short but most of them are tall. the short ones are short because of the terrible sand storms and not much rain. and if your talking serious, I've seen a Cactus that is 42metres tall in the desert!!!
i have to ask my teacher
yes cause the desert is a dry land so they need more roots to get water to the plant -science teacher 101
