The Academy Award (Oscar) for Best Motion Picture (Best Picture) was originally called the Academy Award for Best Production. The film 'Wings' was the first honored with this very prestigious award in 1929. The film is a 1927 silent movie about World War I fighter pilots Charles 'Buddy' Rogers and Richard Arlen who vie for the attentions of the same woman. According to Wikipedia, The first Academy Awards were presented on May 16, 1929 at a private dinner held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Tickets cost $10 and fewer than 250 people attended.
