A tight-fitting lid, a fire blanket, a box of sodium bicarbonate or salt may work, but a type ABC fire extinguisher would be best. Turn off the electric source as well.

Under NO circumstances use a water-type (often class A) on a hot oil fire or on an energized electrical device.

use a Carbon Dioxide Gas Fire extinguisher!

Putting a cloth over the top of the pan smothers the fire because it removes the oxygen.

A chip pan fire would be flaming grease, so you would use either an ABC, BC or K extinguisher on that type of fire, NEVER a type A that contains water.
