  • Many foods contain gluten. Basically any foods that contain wheat flour will not be suitable for coeliacs. Oats have no gluten, but I am a coeliac and I 'react' with oats, the same for wheat flour.
  • Wheat, barley, and rye all have gluten in them. Any foods/products made with these grains are also unsafe.
  • Oats do not contain gluten but are almost always processed with wheat. You can buy specially labeled "gluten free" oats but they can be difficult to find and some ceoliacs still react to them.
  • For more detailed information, and for long lists of unsafe foods, see the page links, further down this page, listed under Sources and Related Links.

That's a difficult question.

Anything made from wheat, barley, or rye, and any product containing ingredients made from these is going to contain gluten. So of course bread, cakes, crackers, and pasta all contain gluten. But there are many products like salad dressing, soy sauce, beer, bleu cheese, malts, or most breakfast cereals that we don't think of as necessarily containing wheat, which are no-nos on a gluten free diet.

A shorter answer is "most foods." Particularly processed and packaged foods. Wheat and barley are hiding all over the place.

There are many many foods that are gluten free, including rice, corn, vegetables, fruits, meats, nuts, eggs, and dairy products. In fact there are way too many to list here. But check out the link below to List of Gluten Free Foods From Around The World for a more complete list.

Basically anything is gluten free if it doesn't contain wheat, rye, or barley, and possibly oats, or any related grains. Or foods made from derivatives of those grains. The foods must also be prepared in such a manner that they aren't contaminated by gluten.

That sounds simple enough, but foods that contain wheat, rye, barley or oats are not always labeled clearly for several reasons:

1) Gluten is found in many flavorings, such as malt flavoring, and in spice mixtures, dressings and sauces such as soy sauce.

2) Gluten is found in grains that are related to wheat, such as spelt, triticale, einkorn, emmer, and farro. It's also found in grain-like foods that are made from wheat: bulgar, cous cous, orzo, etc.

3) Foods may also be contaminated by gluten if they come in contact with a cooking utensil, surface, or cooking oil that has touched a product containing gluten.

These are just a few places where gluten may turn up and be hazardous to someone with Celiac disease or other form of gluten sensitivity. For a more complete list of the sources of gluten, including hidden glutens in personal products and things like glue, check out the link below for sources of gluten.
