From one super continent (Pangea) to their present postitions (they are still moving) is Continental Drift. It wasn't until the 1960s that scientists infact named it 'Plate Tectonics'. - earth's crust is made up of a number of large, rigid plates - these plates floats on the mantle - mantle contains convection currents that cause the molten fluid to move and circulate - causing the floating crust above to move - plates can therefore move around - about 1.5 inches per year

The tectonic plates on the earths crust are constantly shifting because of gravity, so after over millions of years, they shifted into their current positions. the ocean is simply water levels, that fill up the more deep sections in the earths crust. the water level is directly related to temperature. if there are no glaciers, the water is free and the levels rise. if it is cold and there are glaciers, then the water level will lower as it is all tied up in glaciers.

In 1912 Alfred wegener discovered and explained the movement of continents?

yes he did he explained that the continents fit like a puzzle but the scientist did not believe him because he could not explain "how"

Why were Wegener's ideas not immediately accepted by the scientific community?

He could not explain why the continents drifted.

What are the theories of the continental drift?

Continental drift is the movement of the earth's continents across the ocean's bed relative to one another. There is no disadvantage as such of this theory however it has certain weaknesses. One of the weakness is that people could not explain the forces that caused these continents to move such great distances.
