When it comes to translators currently the highest paid positions are for Pashto, a language native to the Middle East and spoken by much of the Taliban and the general population, so the government desperately needs competent translators/interpreters. Arabic comes close afterwards followed by languages like Russian or French.
Domestic practicality for someone living in the U.S. the most in demand language would be Spanish, but one wouldn't exactly find a lucrative carrier unless you were to become a professor at a university or something of the sort.
