Abraham Lincoln - the Father of the Republican Party - was its first ever President.

The Republican Party or GOP (Grand Ole Party) evolved from the former Whig Party.

*Technically, the Whig Party collapsed because of various weaknesses, but primarily because they were fiercely divided over Slavery. Half of the Whigs were for Abolition; they left and joined the brand-new Republican Party. The Whig Party then collapsed, and Abraham Lincoln joined the Republican Party afterward.

The earliest Whig Party in America was formed in 1776 and it was called the American Whig Party. The Founding Fathers of this party were HENRY CLAY and John Quincy Adams, of which Thomas Jefferson was not a member.

Thomas Jefferson was the founder of the original "Democratic-Republican Party," established in 1792 and dissolved in 1825. Jeffersonian Democracy evolved into Jacksonian Democracy under President Andrew Jackson -- who spread Irish & African slavery in America westward. With Jackson, The Democratic-Republican Party (or Jackson Men) became The Democratic Party. See President William "Jefferson" Clinton for more information.

*Not far off. Basically, two splinter Parties calved off from the Democratic-Republicans, and the remainder dropped the word "Republican" -- which is how the name was available later for the Abolitionist Movement.

Those who opposed Jackson (Anti-Jackson Men) were known as The Whigs, Free-Soil Party, Know-Nothings & The Anti-Mason Party.

They evolved into the modern day Republican Party - whose first ever President was not a founder - but is known as the Father of the GOP - Abraham Lincoln.

*Hmm. To be more accurate, the two factions then were Jeffersonians and Hamiltonians. Jeffersonians wanted Democracy, Hamiltonians wanted an oligarchy of the Rich.

Yes. The Modern Day Republican Party is Conservative and faith based - as was President Abraham Lincoln.

*The Modern Day Republican Party is Conservative, but the original Republican Party was Progressive. Can you picture Conservatives telling rich landowners that half of their "property" was actually Free human beings and NOT theirs to sell or use ?

Abraham Lincoln*,
"You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money.
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away men's initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves."

*This quote is a hoax. Lincoln never said that.

Abraham Lincoln,
"I can see how it might be possible for a man to look down upon the earth and be an atheist, but I cannot conceive how a man could look up into the heavens and say there is no God."

There is no records within the Republican Party that give credit to a single individual for the creation of the Republican Party. It appears that Whig party members, perhaps located in Wisconsin left the Whigs and focused on slavery and Catholicism issues. There also is no record as to when Abraham Lincoln joined the Republican Party. The issues that concerned early Republicans like John Fremont, were Catholicism and the Slave Power conspiracy. These issues no longer exist. Currently, it can be said that moderate Republicans believe and support the US Constitution and favor smaller federal governments and less taxation. With that said, there are liberal and conservative Republicans that adhere to what is defined as "liberal" and "conservative". The vast majority of Republicans fall somewhere in between the left and right wings of the Party.
