If ideal complete combustion occurs, fossil fuels release carbon dioxide gas and water vapor as the main products. Complete combustion occurs when sufficient oxygen exists for all of the hydrocarbon material to be completely oxidized in the oxidation-reduction combustion reaction. If insufficient oxygen is present, carbon monoxide will also be formed which is a toxic colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas. Carbon may also be formed.

Most of the time the combustion products are carbon dioxide with a small fraction of carbon monoxide. Most states in the United States place a limit on the amount of carbon monoxide a vehicle is allowed to produce, which is usually quite small.

Other pollutants produced from the combustion of fossil fuels include sulfur dioxide (SO2), sulfur trioxide(SO3), nitric oxide (NO), and nitrous dioxide (NO2). The sulfur impurities are caused by combustion of the impurity hydrogen sulfide, mercaptans, or other sulfur compounds in the original fossil fuel. The nitrogen oxides are caused by combustion of nitrogen molecules in the fuel as well as the contact of the high temperature nitrogen in the air surrounding the engine. (Air is approximately 80% nitrogen). These pollutants are responsible for a host of environmental problems including smog and acid rain.

In most cases: Carbon dioxide and water

This is because oil based fuels contain a combination of hydrogen and carbon. These fuels include natural gas, gasoline, diesel, candle wax, etc. When water is released from these fuels it is emitted as vapour, so we do not see it.

Coal based fuels release only carbon dioxide. This is because they are made of carbon.

But most fuels have impurities, which release other gases when burned. Often these are bad pollutants. For example sulphur in fuels releases sulphur dioxide, which causes acid rain.

From a technical point of view, this is a totally unanswerable question.....fuel can be anything that burns, and obviously a tire fire, jet fuel, wood, gasoline or furnace oil don't all combust in the same manner and don't produce the same end compounds.

In general - most things that are commonly burnt, wood, coal, oil and gas are all carbon compounds that require oxygen to burn, so most of the commonly burned fossil fuels or carbon based compounds release compounds of ...carbon and oxygen! (ie. carbon dioxide and/or carbon monoxide)

Although carbon dioxide is produced when carbon based fuels is burned there are many other gses emitted. These include a wide range of organics (alkanes, aromatics), carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides. and water. This depends on the overall composition of the fuel and the conditions in the combustion zone. Hydrogen fuelled cars produce only water as a gaseous emission.

Carbon Dioxide of course!

What products are formes if you burn plastic?

Plastic can be burned as a fuel inresiource recovery. If it is burned at 2500o F ,the only gases released are CO2 and H2O. You have to keep the temperature up to get this result, otherwise poisonous gases can be released.

How is waste be made into energy?

Waste is sometimes made into energy through the process of decay. As garbage decays, it releases gases. These gases are collected and burned for fuel.
