This is from the CDC's flu vaccine instructions to health care providers:

"The intramuscular route is recommended for TIV. Adults and older children should be vaccinated in the deltoid muscle. A needle length of 1 inch or longer (>25 mm) should be considered for persons in these age groups because needles of <1 inch might be of insufficient length to penetrate muscle tissue in certain adults and older children. When injecting into the deltoid muscle among children with adequate deltoid muscle mass, a needle length of 7/8--1.25 inches is recommended.

Infants and young children should be vaccinated in the anterolateral aspect of the thigh. A needle length of 7/8--1 inch should be used for children aged <12 months."

The typical IM syringe needle is a 25.4 mm (1 or 1 1/2 inch) long needle and it is usually 22-25 Gauge size. The size does not vary by the age of the patient, usually, but more typically it varies by what the drug is and the type and location of the tissue into which it is intended to be injected. The clinician giving the injection will determine if the needle length is appropriate and can adjust the depth of insertion of the needle based on the person's body habitus (size).

Flu shots have been administered intramuscularly (IM) in the upper arm in adults and in the thigh in children aged over six months. Children under six months can not be vaccinated yet.

There is also now a new intradermal (ID) injection for flu for adults ages 18 - 64.

The ID syringe needle is tiny in comparison to the IM needles (90% smaller) and is very useful for the needle-averse patient due to small size, less pain on injection, and the needle is not readily visible in the special micro-injection system for the ID vaccine.

ID needles are short, injected only 1.5 mm deep (0.039 inches) and are thin (30 gauge).

More about flu vaccine administration:

The amount of vaccine in an adult dose of the IM H1N1/09 flu shot is 0.5 mL (one half cc), which is a very small amount (approximately 1/10 of a teaspoon). But the micro dose of ID vaccine is even smaller at only 0.1 mL.

The IM vaccine's dose of antigen is 45 mcg while the ID contains antigen in a dose of 27 mcg for as good or better immunization. The skin has special immune system cells available that help the ID vaccine work better.

In trials 96% of clinicians administering the vaccines would recommend the ID vaccine.

What gauge needle do you use to give a horse a shot?

For vaccines or to draw blood I would use a 20 gauge needle on adult sheep and a 22 gauge on a lamb. To administer medications such as penicillin, I would use a 16 or 18 gauge depending upon the drug and the volume needed.

What size and length needle do you use to inject vitamin b12?

21 gauge

What determines the gauge of the needle?

the gauge is the measurement of how big around the stud or needle is

Why is a 21 gauge needle recommended for venipuncture?

The 21 gauge is a smaller needle.

Is a 22 gauge smaller than a 23 gauge needle?

Gauge is the term that indicates the diameter of the needle. Most commonly the needles that are used for medical purposed range from 7 Gauge to 33 Gauge, according to the Stubs scale. 7 Gauge needle will have the largest diameter while as the number increase, the diameter decreases. Therefore the 33 Gauge needle has the smallest diameter. So a 26 Gauge needle will have a smaller diameter than that of the 18 Gauge needle.

Is the gauge of the needle the bore size?

Yes, the larger the gauge the smaller the needle size.

What is the length of needle for sq?

3/8 to 5/8 inch, usually sized at 25 or 23 gauge respectively.

Is a 30 gauge needle small?

Yes, a 30 gauge needle would be tiny, while an 8 guage needle is huge.

What is dial gauge?

A round gauge with a needle to point at the measure.

Is a 25 gauge smaller than a 22 gauge needle?

Yes it is smaller in terms of diameter. Explanation: 25 gauge refers to a needle having an inner diameter of 1/25" (1/25 inches) and 22 gauge refers to a needle having an inner diameter of 1/22" (1/22 inches). Thus the 25 gauge needle has a smaller inner diameter than a 22 gauge needle.

Can you use a 23 gauge needle for a flu shot?

It could be used as long as the needle length is approximately 1 1/2 inches long so that it reaches the muscle tissue. The flu vaccine injections are given IM (intramuscularly) except if it is the new intradermal type of vaccine, which has its own delivery system with a very tiny needle injected into the layers of skin. The typically sized needle for IM administration of medication is a 22-25 gauge, 1 1/2 inch IM needle. 23 gauge is slightly larger around than a 25 gauge, so it is possible you could feel it slightly more when inserted. A 23 gauge needle has an outer diameter of 0.02525 inches. A 25 gauge needle has an outer diameter of 0.02025 inches. As long as you are able to correctly measure the proper dosage, it could be used.
