Had to do a little bit of Surfing to try and find an answer to this one, but i think i might of found something that will help ya.
4-speed automatics up to 2005 are originally specified for Subaru ATF / Dexron 3. All 5-speed automatics plus 4-speeds from 2006-on require Subaru ATF-HP or equivalent - earlier 4-speeds may benefit from this higher specification. Full quantity is 9.5 litres but a simple drain/refill will only yield 3 to 4 litres.
Front diff is separate on the automatic and uses the same oil GL5 as the rear diff - 2.0 litres will do both.
hope this helps

Is the oil leaking and hitting exhaust? if so it is the o-ring in the oil pump. Subaru is known for that!
A 2002 Subaru Legacy uses standard 10w-30 weight motor oil. During the winter, a lighter weight oil may be desirable in particularly harsh locations.
It is important to maintain the proper fluid levels in a car. The 1998 Subaru Legacy wagon holds 4 1/2 quarts of oil.

My 1997 legacy gt sedan takes 4.8 quarts of oil.
the front diff is part of the gearbox and the diff/gearbox oil is the same-there is a dipstick on the offside of the box near the bellhousing.
