Federal tax laws that were passed in 1913 and was an admendment to the constitution. This money is used to fund hi ways, schools, military, medical, and other things. One of the problems with taxes is the lower income people seem to pay more than the higher income. This is income inequality.
Actually according to the US Constitution Article 1 Section 8 states "The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;" (bold and itallics added for emphasis.
The 16th ammendment simply added ..."from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration."
For those who believe the 16th amendment was never ratified, it doesn't matter.
When the federal income tax plans began in the early part of the 20th century, it was not very popular at all. Many protests were made concerning this type of tax. Many people believed it was even unconstitutional. Based on the powers granted to the US government by the US Constitution, it was all quite legal.
