Because at night it functions as a mirror for the sun. It's like this:

You -------> (watch in this direction) ----> Moon (mirroring the sunlight in your eye)

Earth (blocks the sun) ............................../

The Moon reflects the light of the Sun, as do all planets and other bodies in the solar system. The Sun (a star) radiates light and heat, and no matter how dark the surface of a body, it will reflect some sunlight or re-radiate some heat.

The moon actually has no light of it's own. The sun's light reflects off it.
