After the start of the Crusades and after the failure of several campaigns by the Templar, for example the defeat at the Battle Of The Horns Of Hattin, they began to lose signficance across Christendom. Support for them dwindled.
King Philip IV, indebted to the Templars after the war with the English decided to try to get Pope Clement to take action against the Order of the Templars because of rumours of heresy. Though it can be argued he merely pushed the topic because of his debt. Whatever his reasons on Friday 13th October, 1307 - Philip ordered de Molay and scores of other French Templars to be simultaneously arrested.
Under continued pressure from Philip, Pope Clement then issued the papal bull Pastoralis Praeeminentiae on November 22, 1307, which instructed all Christian monarchs in Europe to arrest all Templars and seize their assets. Captured and tortured, at their hearing some templars surrendered to confession, others had sufficient legal experience to defend themselves in the hearings however Philip (1310) blocked these attempts and many Templars were burnt at the stake.
With further threats from Philip, Clement disbanded the order of the Knights Templars at the Council of Vienne - 1212.
