Great Kantō Earthquake
The Great Kantō Earthquake was situated in Japan, between the two cities of Tokyo and Yokohama. Because Japan is located on the edge of the Eurasian Plate near its boundary with the Pacific Plate, it has been struck by so many earthquakes over the years that it has been nicknamed 'The Earthquake Factory'.
The earthquake happened on September 1st 1923 at 11:58:32. It lasted for four minutes in which chaos happened. Since it was two minutes to noon most of the Japanese were cooking there midday meal, so when they disaster struck there was a lot of things that could have gone wrong, and they did. The fire caught and spread with haste, trapping people's feet in melting tarmac and then burning them.
The approximate number of casualties are about 142,800 deaths, approximately 40,000 of them where of those who went missing and were presumed dead. The biggest Death Rate was when more than 40,000 people found safety in a park called the 'Military Clothing Depot'. The buildings all around caught fire, causing a firestorm. It swept through the crowd at one-hundred and fifty miles an hour.38,000 people died in that part of the catastrophe.
