The Dutch had already decided it was not worth bothering with, and the English were not remotely interested, having received word from William Dampier that it was barren, lifeless and miserable. James Cook did not make his famous journey to the east coast until 1770. The only people who were still prowling around the continent, with varied degrees of interest, were the French - and they didn't make their forst formal claim to Australian territory until 1772.
