The ruins of Pompeii are world famous. They are located in Italy, southeast of Naples. In 79 AD, the volcano Mount Vesuvius erupted and entombed the city in a deep layer of burning hot volcanic ash. Although they lived at the foot of the volcano, the inhabitants ignored the early rumblings and smoke, all of which had happened before. But this time it erupted, spewing out hot deadly ash, not lava, so the people were suffocated and died where they stood, and everything was covered over by a deep layer of hardened ash.

In 1748 the lost city was rediscovered and excavation was started. Visitors can now walk through the streets and houses and see plaster casts of people and dogs, just as they were when they died in their homes. The original bodies were gone after all these years, but the hardened ash had made perfect molds of the bodies, and plaster can be poured into them to create a 'statue' of the person as he died on that day.

Well, I'm Yoo-Jin and I want to answer that. I'm in 4th grade and I'm learning about that. All the people died there like plebeians, patrons, women and slaves everyone knows that... well, maybe not but mostly EVERYONE knows that! That is incorrect, first of all not everyone died, people escaped from the city beforehand because they saw the smoke coming from the volcano. That happened for a long time, then it blew its top off. Second, obviously you don't know that because its incorrect. :P

The Romans did not conquer Pompeii. When Rome expanded into central and southern Italy, she turned the peoples of these areas into allies. Pompeii was forced to become an ally after the Third Samnite War (298-290 BC). She retained her autonomy.

Pompeii remained loyal to Rome during Hannibal's invasion of Italy in the second Punic War (219 BC-201 BC)

Pompeii joined the rebels in the Social or Allied War (91-88 BC). This war was a rebellion by many of Rome's Italic allies which broke out when the Roman senate rejected a proposal from the consul Marcus Livius Drusus to grant the allies Roman citizenship and assassinated him. The Roman general Lucius Cornelius Sulla besieged Pompeii in 89 BC. At the end of the war, the towns on the Nucera League (Nucera Alfaterna, Pompeii, Herculaneum Stabiae and Sorrento) were given Roman citizenship and incorporated into the Nemenia tribe (a Roman administrative division).

In 80 BC Lucius Cornelius Sulla established a Roman colony (settlement) at Pompey which he called Cornelia Veneria Pompeianorum. This was not a conquest of the town, which was already part of the Roman state and had Roman citizenship. The aim was to settle the veterans who had fought with Sulla in the Social war and in Sulla's two civil wars against Gaius Marius because veterans were entitled to a grant of a plot of land to farm (agraria missio) on discharge. This was something which was going to happen to many towns in Italy. Pompeii was the first such case. The allocation of land was at the expense of the families who had opposed Sulla.

Pompeii's trade with Rome, which had already been thriving for a long time, increased. The town was an important port where goods imported by sea were sent to Rome or the rest of southern Italy via the nearby Appian Way. She exported the wines of the area. The beauty and good climate made Pompeii, like the other towns of the Bay of Naples, a popular holiday resort for the wealthy Romans.
