In The Harrying of the North, the army of Svein Estrithson, the King of Denmark, and English rebels that were against William the 11, captured York. This happened from 1069-1070, three years after William won The Battle of Hastings. William then marched from Nottingham to York, destroying anything that stood in his way. When he reached York, just before Christmas, he burnt it to the ground.

The Harrying of the North, or sometimes the Harrowing of the North was a series of campaigns conducted by William the Conqueror in 1069 to 1070. This was undertaken to end the independence of local lords, and replace them with total Norman Control.

Basically there was a rebellion in the north and William killed nearly everyone there and made sure they couldn't grow any crops which led to them starving.
