Mark's Gospel has been described as the story of the last week of the life of Jesus, with a long introduction. It describes how Jesus came to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover, rode on a colt into Jerusalem on a colt, while a great crowd waved leafy branches and cried, "Hosanna." He cursed a fig tree for not bearing fruit out of season, suggesting that the passage about the leafy branches actually belonged in the season of the festival of Sukkoth, when the deciduous trees had leaves and Jews waved leafy branches and cried out "Hosanna." Jesus went to the Temple, where he overturned the tables of the money-changers, causing the priests and scribes to decide that Jesus must be brought to trial.

There followed the events of the last twenty four hours, which Mark divides into eight segments, each of exactly three hours:

  • Mark begins the story "when it was evening" (14:17). In this ancient world without electricity, that would mean when the sun went down, or approximately 6 pm.
  • Mark knew that the duration of the Passover meal was three hours and that it concluded with the singing of a hymn. So at the end of his segment he noted, "And when they had sung a hymn they went out to the Mount of Olives". It was obviously about 9 p.m.
  • Mark then has Jesus and the disciples go to the Garden of Gethsemane, where his closest disciples, Peter, James and John, were not able to remain awake. "Could you not watch one hour?" Jesus asked. The process was repeated two more times. The disciples could not watch one, two or three hours. It was now midnight.
  • The act of betrayal, the darkest deed in human history, came next, occurring at the stroke of midnight.
  • Jesus was led away for a trial before the high priest and other senior priests and elders. This governing body then judged him, on the basis of his messianic claim, to be worthy of death. It was 3:00 a.m.
  • The watch of the night between 3 am and 6 am was called cockcrow. Mark now inserted his account of Peter's threefold denial of Jesus, once each hour until the cock crowed, marking the end of that phase of the night. That makes it 6 am.
  • "As soon as it was morning", which would be 6 am, Jesus was led by the chief priests, scribes and elders to Pontius Pilate for judgement.
  • Mark told his readers once again that this drama has been shaped liturgically, saying, " It was the third hour," or 9 am "when they crucified him".
  • When "the sixth hour had come" (12 noon), darkness covered the whole earth, reflecting the betrayal at 12 midnight.
  • After three hours of darkness, Jesus said "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" At 3 pm, Jesus gave up the ghost. Jesus was buried in the final period from 3 to 6 pm, before the sun went down. That brings us to 6 pm on Friday evening, reflecting the beginning of the passion on 6 pm on Thursday evening.

A:The order of events differs from gospel to gospel, so it should be best to report the order of events in Mark's Gospel as this was the first New Testament gospel to be written and the principal source for the other gospels, directly (Matthew and Luke) or indirectly (John).

Jesus enters Jerusalem on Palm Sunday on a young donkey, while delirious crowds wave leafy branches and shout "Hosanna, Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. (Psalm 118:25-6)." The other gospels agree with this, except that John has the people wave palm branches because of the season, and Matthew has Jesus riding on a donkey and a colt, apparently at the same time.

As soon as they entered Jerusalem, Jesus went into the Temple and looked around.

That evening, they went out to Bethany. The next morning, returning from Bethany, Jesus was hungry and saw a fig tree afar off. He cursed the tree for not bearing fruit out of season.

Jesus then went into the Temple and began to cast out them who sold and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers. When evening was come, he went out of the city. The next morning, the disciples saw that the fig tree Jesus had cursed was dead.

Once again, Jesus entered the Temple, where the priests demanded of him what authority he had for these things - no doubt his behaviour the day before (11:28).

Jesus told the parable of the vineyard and, as they left the Temple, prophesied his own return on clouds of glory within the lifetimes of some of his listeners (12:1-13:27).

Mark's author divided the last twenty four hours in the life of Jesus into eight periods of just three hours each, marking off time to measure the three hours in each period:

  • "When it was evening", or approximately 6 pm, Jesus and the disciples began the Last Supper.
  • The duration of the Passover meal was three hours and it concluded with the singing of a hymn. So at the end of his segment Mark noted, "And when they had sung a hymn they went out to the Mount of Olives". It was about 9 p.m.
  • Jesus and the disciples went to the Garden of Gethsemane, where his closest disciples, Peter, James and John, were not able to remain awake. "Could you not watch one hour?" Jesus asked. The process was repeated two more times. The disciples could not watch one, two or three hours. It was now midnight.
  • The act of betrayal, the darkest deed in human history occurred at the stroke of midnight.
  • Jesus was led away for a trial before the Sanhedrin.
That makes it 6 a.m.
  • "As soon as it was morning", which would be 6 o'clock, Jesus was led by the chief priests, scribes and elders to Pontius Pilate for judgement.
  • "It was the third hour", or 9 o'clock "when they crucified him".
  • When "the sixth hour had come" (12 noon), as if on cue, darkness covered the whole earth for three hours, a counterpoint to the midnight betrayal.
  • At the end of the three hours, at 3 p.m., Jesus said "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"
  • Jesus was buried in the final period from 3 to 6 p.m., before the sun went down and the Sabbath began.

This structure was copied more or less faithfully by the authors of Matthew and Luke, without consciously following the chronology of Mark.
