In short, she died from her liver giving up on her from drinking too much.

This is the case of a very horrifically abused young boy who was brutalized by his mother Roerva Pelzer (aka: Catherine) an alcoholic. There were five boys in the family and not even David Pelzer knows why his mother singled him out. His father Stephen was a firefighter and an alcoholic and instead of standing up for his son, he deserted the family making things worse for David. There is a book out called A child called 'IT". This is what his mother would call him, and according to David's recollection his mother told him that if she hadn't abused him so severely she would have killed him and buried him out in the backyard. It was only a very on the ball teacher that saw the plight David was in and reported the abuse. David was taken away. When David was gone his brother Richard was the next one to be picked on. However, his mother was not convicted. There were few abuse laws back in those days. Her ex husband died in 1980 and she died on January 1992 from a heart attack while she was sleeping.

There is much controversy over the two books that David Pelzer wrote regarding his abuse. Some people were in tears reading the book while others found it so outrageous their minds couldn't grasp that such things could happen for so long to one child without being noticed. The doubts are still going on by viewers who have seen David Pelzer on TV and also those who have read his books.

[Personally, I believe David Pelzer. David's brother Richard has also written a book on the abuse (backs his brother) and the abuse Richard went through and he's started on his second book.]

People have to remember that there were no Child Abuse Laws back then and people didn't get involved with other people's business. There is no reason not to believe David Pelzer.

Their other three brother deny any abuse happened in the family, but that's not uncommon for siblings to 'split' when it comes to protecting either a mother, father or both. Besides that, the other three brothers were never abused by their mother and joined along with her regarding the abuse towards David. The three opposing brothers believed their mother over their brothers David and Richard simply because of their environment. Each child sees abuse in a different light. To this day the other three brothers will have no part of it and David and Richard's relationship has turned on the frosty side for whatever reasons.

One other brother was actually abused, Richard Pelzer. There is a book about it, "A brother's journey"

Please Remember that David's Mother was abused as a child as well, which is why she breaks contact with his Grandmother.

David's mother was a Psychopath. A psychopath by definition is characterized by an abnormal lack of empathy combined with strongly amoral conduct but masked by an ability to appear outwardly normal. This diagnosis didn't appear in the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) until 1980 which supports why Mrs. Pelzer was never diagnosis or treated for her illness.

The argument as to why David's abuse was never reported by school officials cannot be won by saying "there were no child protection laws in the 1970's". The first child protection law was established in 1825 when the federal government provided social-welfare agencies funds to remove neglected children from their parents and placed in almshouses or orphanages. In 1835 the Humane Society founded the National Federation of Child Rescue agencies to investigate child maltreatment.

This is a classic case of a child being failed by the system. The school system especially.
