Pan Am Flight 103 suffered an onboard explosion that caused the aircraft to break up in flight. Investigators determined that a bomb that was in a hold had gone off, and because of the location of the explosion, critical structural and control functions were damaged. The explosive device was far forward, but beneath and behind the cockpit. The 747's nose with the flight deck and the first class section broke off within a couple of seconds of the blast, and this part of the aircraft tore off the number 3 engine as it was ripped away. The rest of the fuselage continued on and down, eventually descending vertically to impact. A link can be found below for more information.
