When Jesus met him, his name was Simon. Later, when he correctly answered the question, "Who do you say that I am." Simon answered, "You are the Christ, the son of the living God." Jesus then told Simon "I shall call you Peter" (which means rock).

Peter after a struggle of guilt and grief (see Matthew 26:75, below), thankfully, went on to become one the boldest, most influential and effective leaders in the advancement of early Christianity. (See Acts 2:38-41, below)

"Peter remembered what Jesus had said: 'Before a rooster crows, you will say three times that you don't know me.' Then Peter went outside and cried bitterly." Matthew 26:75

"Peter said to them, 'Change your hearts and lives and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away. It is for everyone the Lord our God calls to himself.' Peter warned them with many other words. He begged them, 'Save yourselves from the evil of today's people!' Then those people who accepted what Peter said were baptized. About three thousand people were added to the number of believers that day." Acts 2:38-41

Paul never met Jesus until he experienced seeing him in a vision on the road to Damascus. Paul was part of the Sanhedrin who were persecuting the Christians after Jesus returned to Heaven. After he had the experience of the vision, Paul became a Christian and an apostle missionary.

Initially, all the apostles (including Peter) did what Jesus commanded them, they went out and preached the good news about God's Kingdom and his savior Jesus Christ.

A week later, they all met together for the Festival of Harvest (also called the Festival of Weeks). On this occasion, 120 of Jesus followers met together and received and outpouring of God's holy spirit.

(Mark 16: 19-20) 19 So, then, the Lord Jesus, after having spoken to them, was taken up to heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 They, accordingly, went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and backed up the message through the accompanying signs.

(Acts 1:1-19) The first account, O The·oph′i·lus, I composed about all the things Jesus started both to do and to teach, 2 until the day that he was taken up, after he had given commandment through holy spirit to the apostles whom he chose. 3 To these also by many positive proofs he showed himself alive after he had suffered, being seen by them throughout forty days and telling the things about the kingdom of God. 4 And while he was meeting with them he gave them the orders: "Do not withdraw from Jerusalem, but keep waiting for what the Father has promised, about which YOU heard from me; 5because John, indeed, baptized with water, but YOU will be baptized in holy spirit not many days after this." 6 When, now, they had assembled, they went asking him: "Lord, are you restoring the kingdom to Israel at this time?" 7 He said to them: "It does not belong to YOU to get knowledge of the times or seasons which the Father has placed in his own jurisdiction; 8 but YOU will receive power when the holy spirit arrives upon YOU, and YOU will be witnesses of me both in Jerusalem and in all Ju·de′a and Sa·mar′i·a and to the most distant part of the earth." 9 And after he had said these things, while they were looking on, he was lifted up and a cloud caught him up from their vision. 10And as they were gazing into the sky while he was on his way, also, look! two men in white garments stood alongside them, 11 and they said: "Men of Gal′i·lee, why do YOU stand looking into the sky? This Jesus who was received up from YOU into the sky will come thus in the same manner as YOU have beheld him going into the sky." 12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from a mountain called the Mount of Olives, which is near Jerusalem, being a sabbath day's journey away. 13 So, when they had entered, they went up into the upper chamber, where they were staying, Peter as well as John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bar·thol′o·mew and Matthew, James [the son] of Al·phae′us and Simon the zealous one, and Judas [the son] of James. 14 With one accord all these were persisting in prayer, together with some women and Mary the mother of Jesus and with his brothers. 15 Now during these days Peter rose up in the midst of the brothers and said (the crowd of persons was all together about one hundred and twenty): 16 "Men, brothers, it was necessary for the scripture to be fulfilled, which the holy spirit spoke beforehand by David's mouth about Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus, 17 because he had been numbered among us and he obtained a share in this ministry. 18 (This very man, therefore, purchased a field with the wages for unrighteousness, and pitching head foremost he noisily burst in his midst and all his intestines were poured out. 19 It also became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that that field was called in their language A·kel′da·ma, that is, Field of Blood.)

He went out boldly and preached the word. He also was crucified on a cross upside down, as he said he was unfit to hang on the cross like Jesus was put on the cross.
