His mother had abandoned him and joined a band, but had appeared to Hassan a very while later when he was married and had a son (before he has a daughter but she was stillborn). She had died peacefully in her sleep when Hassan's son (Sohrab) was a little boy.

After running away after bearing Hassan, she turns up at his (Amir's) doorstep many years later, during the taliban's rule of the country. She appears to have been beaten or attacked most probably by the taliban, due to their complete disregard and respect for women and human life. hassan recognises her, and takes her in, and he and his wife look after her, until one day she peacefully passes away. She is buried in their garden, near the wall of Ailing Corn, I think, or underneath the pomegranate tree.
