What happened to losing armies in the 1940s?

[Edit]

Answer

Generally they were "Demobilized."

The Germans, Italians and Japanese turned in their weapons, were interviewed and questioned and for the most part they were then sent home. Those that belonged to certain units, particularly those that ran prisons, were kept longer as the Allies determined whether there were any war crimes associated with the individuals.
