The Jericho site was first settled around 9,000 BCE because of a nearby spring that provided a reliable water supply. The city was rebuilt several times, and finally abandoned sometime around 1550 BCE and allowed to fall into ruins. It then remained unoccupied until the city was refounded in the ninth century BCE. After the Babylonian invasion, it was again unoccupied between 586 and 538 BCE. A story is to be found in the Book of Joshua of its conquest approximately 1400 BCE, but at that time there was really only a small, unwalled village on the site.
