The Romanovs were the last Imperiall Family to rule the Russian Empire. The last leader of this dynasty was Tsar Nicholas II. He was Tsar during the troublesome period of the First World War. In 1917, the Bolshevik Party, under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin, orchestrated a rebellion, known as The October Revolution, that toppled the ancient autocratic Russian aristocracy, resulting in the capture and imprisonment of the Tsar and his entire family.

After this, the Romanovs were transported to various locations around Russia under Bolshevik protection, a scheme intended to keep them from falling into the insurgent Tsarists. These insurgents would later form fragile alliances with the communists' enemies, forming a military body known as the White Army (in contrast with the Communist "Reds").

Despite this, many elements in the Government felt that it would be best if the family were "removed" from the political circle, as they were a lasting threat during a time of Civil war in Russia.

It wasn't until 1918 that the family finally met their ends.

Whilst there are many theories, nobody knows exactly why they were executed. It may have been a Government order, or an independent act by the Romanovs' imprisoners. Whatever the case, somebody had decided that they had become too great a threat to be kept alive.

On 17 July 1918, Tsar Nicholas II was executed, along with his wife, daughters, son, maids, and Doctor. They were killed via a disorganized firing squad: so disorganised that it took some of the victims a while to die; the daughters were finished off with bayonets.

Following this, their bodies were disposed of, via a variety of attempted means. Eventually, the bodies were buried at various different locations.

There is no doubt that the Romanovs' execution was highly illegal, and the act was covered up by the Bolshevik Government. The truth was not fully revealed until the 1990's, when the remains were finally excavated.
