He made them as slaves and forced them to become christians.
Christopher Columbus actually had to choose between two very different kinds of indigenous people that inhabited this Caribbean area.. The Arawak, that in Chris' estimate were more active, industrious & in his own words "easier to civilize" than their cousins the Carib Indians that lived on different islands. His estimate of them was to be more laid back, simplistic, & naked. So of course that much more difficult to civilize. Since Chris' objective to explore & claim for Spain was not the main reason for his voyage. His motive was the same as all the Spaniards that followed, that being gold & riches. Since his trip on the first voyage yielded no booty he insisted on three more. The first offered little to satisfy him except the strong backs of the souls that lived there. The Spaniards and Portuguese had a trade that profited much by the slaves. Slaves brought the next highest price save for gold.
they got a bunch of deiseases and they endured cruel and unusual punishments. they were forced to become slaves and look for gold to save Columbus's own life, and his family's life. also, their population decressed by alot because of the deiseses and becaue they werent used to hard labor.
it is now held in a museum in Barcelona Spain
