Roanoke is the "Lost Colony" for a reason. No one knows what happened to its people. It is a mystery that is still yet to be solved. There are only theories about what happened at Roanoke . The colonists could have died from a disease, or they tried to sail back home on their small ship, or got invaded by the Wompanog Indians or the Croaton Native Americans took them.

In 1587, Sir Walter Raleigh outfitted a ship with 91 men, 17 women, and 9 children and sent them on their way to the shores of Chesapeake Bay. Strong winds blew the expedition off course and they landed on an island off the coast of what would become North Carolina. The island was Roanoke. Roanoke was settled in 1587. The settlers attempted to establish a colony there while the ship returned to England for supplies. When it's founder returned to England for supplies, it took him 3 years to return because the journey both ways was long and dangerous, and England was at war with Spain.

When Raleigh's agents found the colony, all that was left were abandoned buildings and the word "CROATOAN" carved on one of the buildings. The men assumed the settlers had moved to Croatan Island near Cape Hatteras. But sailing there, they found no trace of the colonists. Some historians think the settlers could not survive on their own and they moved in with some local Indians, the Lumbee Tribe. The members of the Lumbee Tribe today claim that is what happened.

The colony of Roanoke is considered one of the greatest mysteries in history because no one knows for sure how or what happened to the missing colonists.
